Base Running

Running is a skill that all kids have. Some are faster then others, but everyone is able to run without being taught. Running the bases is a different story. I have seen games lost at the Major League level because of bad base running. Anyone remember Lonnie Smith of the Atlanta Braves in the 1991 World Series against the Minnesota Twins? That one gaffe prevented the Braves from a possible World Series ring.

Proper base running should be taught at the earliest age possible. You don’t need any special equipment, and skill set doesn’t matter.  It involves concentration on the players part, knowing the game situation at all times, and base coaches that are one step ahead of the action. Add some base running drills to every practice. It is a great way to get the blood flowing before you break into your stations, take infield, or batting practice.
